When David fled from Saul, one of the places he ended up was the cave of Adullam. It was here that David seemingly reached his lowest point. We know this because he composed a psalm here, which was a prayer from the cave. Psalm 142 tells us what he was thinking, and how he ultimately had no hope except God!
