When Samuel anointed the shepherd boy David, He was at that moment – in the mind and purpose of God – the King of Israel! But instead of marching down to Jerusalem and forcefully deposing Saul, David humbly took up the shepherd’s staff and went back to his father’s sheepfold. And when the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and his servants called for David, who was skillful on the harp, to come play the harp for the king. David humbly accepted this new job, and moved into the palace, where God would by His providence train him for his future reign.
