Sermon Series: The Gospel of Mark, Part Eleven – Are You Cutting the Ends Off the Ham? (Elder Chris McCool, August 9, 2020) (Mark 7:1-23)

Zig Ziglar once told the story of a newly wed husband who watched while his young wife was putting a ham into the stove to cook. He noticed that she cut the ends off the ham before she placed it in the pan, and asked her why she did that. She said, “I’ve always done it that way, because my mother did it that way.” In this account, Mark tells us about a time when Jesus faced traditions and legalism among the Pharisees. Their traditions, which may have been started for good reasons, had become more important than the commandments of God! Join us as we take a look at Jesus’ view of traditions and legalism, and learn that the young bride was the victim of a generations-long misunderstanding: “it’s always been done that way” isn’t really a good reason to be cutting the ends off the ham!
